Life & Work with Dorothy Nell Betts
Dorothy "Nell" Betts, originally from Shreveport, Louisiana, moved to Kansas City, Kansas, in 1977. Guided by the strong family values instilled in her by her grandparents, she built a life rooted in love and resilience. After marrying the love of her life and blending a family of five children, she embraced her role as a devoted grandmother to sixteen grandchildren. The birth of her youngest child, who was born with special needs, inspired her to pursue a deeper understanding of child development. She went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in the field from Park University.
At Layla is My Joy, our mission revolves around inspiring both children and families to appreciate the everyday wonders that life presents. We create books that are intended to spark joy, nurture connections, and help build lasting memories. Our philosophy embraces the value of life's simple pleasures, whether it's the joy of dancing in the rain or the warmth of baking alongside loved ones. By cherishing these moments, we strive to foster a sense of joy, gratitude, and belonging in individuals of all ages, ultimately enriching lives and fortifying the bonds within our communities. Each book we produce is thoughtfully designed with the whole child in mind. Additionally, to enhance the reading experience, each book will feature a fun make-and-take activity that invites engagement from readers of all ages.

I can recall my second-grade teacher and the significant impact she had on my creative development. I had such a huge admiration for her; she was vibrant and full of wonder. Her influence inspired me to experiment with my drawings, and each sketch ignited a flow of words in my mind. However, I kept my writing desires at bay until my junior year of high school when I joined the school newspaper and enrolled in a poetry class. In those moments, the words that had been waiting within me began to materialize, forming lines and symbols on paper.
As the years passed, jotting down my ideas transformed into a routine, evolving into stories that I felt compelled to share. Yet, it wasn’t until I started spending time with my grandchildren that my passion for writing truly took flight. My third-born grandchild, in particular, inspired the character in my first novel. Her fearless tenacity became a driving force behind my journey as a writer.
Join me as I embark on this new adventure. I can proudly say, "Hey mama, I wrote a book!"
